Meghan Fardelmann registers goal and two assists

Orono, Maine- Senior Sonia Corriveau (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) scored two goals to help the University of Maine women's ice hockey team battle back from a 3-0 deficiet, but it wasn't enough against No. 10-ranked Boston College. With the 5-3 loss, the Black Bears fall to 1-5-0 and 0-2-0 in Hockey East. Today's game was BC's first conference match, giving them a 1-0-0 Hockey East record, 3-0-0 overall.

The Eagles got on the board first with a power-play goal scored by Meghan Fardelmann at 10:01 of the first period. Assisting on the play were Kelli Stack and goaltender Molly Schaus. BC's Anna McDonald notched a short-handed goal at 14:13 of the first. Earning her second point of the game with the assist was Fardelmann.

The Eagles extended the lead to 3-0 at 2:07 of the second period on a power-play goal by Becky Zavisza. Earning the assists on the goal were blueliners Gabrielle Beaudry and Maggie Taverna.

Corriveau got the scoring started for the Black Bears with a power-play goal at 6:51 of the second. Rookie Amy Stech (Duluth, Minn.) earned her first colliegate point with the assist on the goal.

BC made it 4-1 at 15:52 of the second period with a power-play goal scored by Kelli Stack, her first career goal. Fardelmann tallied the assist on the Eagles third power-play goal of the game, her third point of the game.

In the final frame, the Eagles increased the lead to 5-1 on a short-handed goal scored at 3:27. The unassisted goal was scored by Alli Thunstrom.

The Black Bears made it 5-2 at 7:31 of the third period on a power-play goal by junior Jenna Cowan (Hartney, Manitoba). The goal, Cowan's first of the season, was unassisted. Corriveau scored her second goal of the game to cut the deficit to 5-3. Freshman blueliner Elyce Thomas (Port Coquitlam, B.C) assisted on goal with 3:12 remaining in the game.

In her season debut, senior goaltender Rachel Gettings (Watervliet, N.Y.) recorded 27 saves. BC's Molly Schaus tallied 14 saves in the winning cause.

The Black Bears travel to battle the Huskies next weekend. Maine will face the Huskies of UConn on Saturday, October 21 at 1 pm. Maine will then play the Huskies of Northeastern on Sunday, October 22 at 2 pm. The Black Bears return home to host North Dakota in a two-game series on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4.
