BOSTON COLLEGE TOPS VERMONT, 7-0
Kelli Stack and Meghan Fardelmann each have two goals and assist for BC

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Propelled by a 4-for-6 effort on the power play, eighth-ranked Boston College skated past Vermont, 7-0, in women’s Hockey East action Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Meghan Fardelmann, Kelli Stack and Allie Thunstrom each scored a pair of goals as BC (14-5-2, 8-3-0) moved into a first-place tie with New Hampshire in the Hockey East standings. UVM falls to 3-16-2 overall and 1-8-1 in league play. Despite the result, Vermont coach Tim Bothwell was positive on his team’s effort.

“That was the best I have seen a team play in a 7-0 loss,” said Bothwell. “Tonight we did more good things collectively moving the puck which is real encouraging. We need to improve our play in front of the net, particularly in our own end. Boston College is a very skilled team and we cannot give them any extra chances in front of the net. We skated very well but we have to be much stronger in winning battles for the puck.”

The Catamounts had several chances to get on the board, especially in the first two periods, but BC goalie Johanna Ellison stopped all 15 UVM shots to pick up the shutout. Vermont’s Jessica Murphy (Shoreview, Minn.) had a big chance in the goalmouth area in the first period and in the second, Ellison made strong saves on Caroline Donahue (Westwood, Mass.) and Jackie Thode (Aurora, Colo.).

Fardelmann opened the scoring with a power play goal with 51 seconds left in the first period and just 16 seconds later, Stack made it 2-0. Deb Spillane, who also finished with two assists, and Stack tacked on power play goals in the second stanza. Fardelmann and Thunstrom, with both of her goals, closed out the scoring in the third.

In addition to its excellent power play effort, Boston College killed all four of Vermont’s penalties. BC outshot the Catamounts, 39-15, for the game. UVM goalie Jenilee Roy (Sandown, N.H.) finished with 32 saves.
