STORRS, Conn. (January 26, 2008) - Junior Nicole Tritter (Toronto, Ont.) had a goal and two assists for the eighth-ranked University of Connecticut women's hockey team but Kelli Stack did likewise for Boston College as the Huskies and Eagles skated to a 3-3 tie on Saturday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.
UConn moves to 16-4-4 overall on the year with the draw and 7-2-2 on its league slate. The Eagles move to 8-9-6 overall and 4-6-2 in Hockey East action.
In each of the three periods, UConn scored a goal and the Eagles countered.
The Huskies opened the scoring 6:42 into the game with defenseman Samantha Reid (Innisfil, Ont.) pinched in from her blue line post and put home the rebound of a Tritter shot. The Eagles would tie the game at 14:27. Playing shorthanded, BC forced an offensive zone face of, which UConn won, but Stack stole the puck in the corner and skated around the net to the slot for an unassisted tally.
The second period's UConn tally came when Tritter slid a pass from the boards across the crease to an anxiously awaiting Amy Holstein (Pembroke, Mass.) who sent the puck home for a 2-1 advantage at 4:47. BC's retaliatory strike came at 9:55 on the power play when Stack fed Meaghan Fardelmann.
After setting up a pair of scores, Tritter found the back of the net herself at the 7:17 mark of the third period to give UConn a 3-2 edge. The Eagles countered with just 4:49 left to play as they rushed down ice and saw Deb Spillane strike on the rebound of a shot by Stack. Overtime would be scoreless.
Jennie Bellonio (Guilford, Conn.) started the game in the Husky net, stopping 30 shots. Molly Schaus made 28 saves for BC. Each team had a single power play goal, UConn's coming on four attempts while the Eagles had six cracks with a man advantage.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday evening when they play host to Northeastern at 7:00 p.m.
