DURHAM, N.H. - Sam Faber (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) recorded three points with a goal and two assists to lift the fifth-ranked University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to a 4-1 victory against the University of Vermont in Hockey East action Saturday evening at the Whittemore Center.
UNH extended its unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1) to improve to 6-1-3 overall and 2-1-2 in Hockey East with one league victory by shootout. UVM lost for the sixth consecutive time to fall to 2-6-0, 0-4-0.
Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ontario) also had a multiple-point game with a goal - the game-winning tally at 10:33 of the first period - and an assist, which was the 50th of her career. Paton is the only Wildcat with a point in all 10 games this season.
UNH goalie Kayley Herman (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) was credited with 11 saves. Vermont counterpart Kristen Olychuck made 10 of her 19 saves in the first period.
Sophomore defenseman Raylen Dziengelewski (Southwick, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal with a power-play tally at 4:55 of the first period to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Maggie Joyce (Hudson, Ohio) won the puck on the right half-boards to Courtney Sheary (Melrose, Mass.) at the point. Sheary quickly moved the puck to the high slot for Angela Taylor (Paisley, Scotland), who slid a pass to Dziengelewski. Her shot from the left circle sailed under the crossbar.
UNH seized momentum and extended the lead to 2-0 with Paton's goal at 10:33. Bellamy's initial shot from the left point was redirected in the slot by Faber to Paton on the left doorstep for the goal.
The Wildcats took that two-goal lead and a 12-5 shot advantage into the first intermission.
Faber netted an unassisted goal - her seventh tally of the season - at 11:27 of the second period to give the home 'Cats a 3-0 lead. She won the puck along the left dashers at the defensive blue line and skated through the neutral zone to the left circle. She then maneuvered past a UVM skater to the low slot, pulled Olychuck out of position and shot into the open net.
Two minutes later, Paton led a 3-on-1 rush down the left side and Julie Allen (Brampton, Ontario) fired a one-timer from the slot wide left of the cage.
Micaela Long (South Boston, Mass.) potted her fourth goal of the season at 15:52 of the second stanza to push the advantage to 4-0. Olychuck stopped Faber's initial shot from the slot, but Long corralled the rebound on the right side for the goal. Paton, with the pass to Faber from the right side, was also credited with an assist.
UNH led 4-0 with a 21-7 edge in shots through 40 minutes.
Vermont pulled within 4-1 at 10:16 of the final frame when Sarah Smiddy scored on a shot from the left doorstep inside the near post. Teddy Fortin and Jackie Thode set up the power-play tally.
That goal ended UVM's scoreless streak against UNH at 260:38 (dating back to Feb. 25, 2007).
The Catamounts nearly struck again when Peggy Wakeham's shot from the slot caromed off the crossbar with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Faber ascended to No. 7 on the program's career assist leaderboard at 89, and she moved into sole possession of No. 10 on the career points list at 160.
Bellamy is now alone at No. 9 on UNH's defensemen career points list at 85.
