Senior forward Jennifer Chaisson scored a goal for the Huskies
Hamden, Conn. - Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont.) were the lone Huskies to score as the University of Connecticut fell to Yale, 5-2 this evening at the Nutmeg Classic. With the loss the Huskies are now 5-8-1 on the season, while Yale is now 3-6-2.
Yale's Samantha McLean put the Bulldogs on the board late in the first period when she was able to put the puck past Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.), giving Yale the 1-0 lead. Yale extended its lead early in the second period when Bray Ketchum posted Yale's second goal of the game at the 8:18 mark.
The Huskies were finally able to get on the board late in the second period when Gross brought the Huskies within one at the 17:17 mark, recording her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont.) recorded her fourth assist of the year when she found Gross with the open shot at the net.
The Bulldogs posted two additional goals in the third period before Chaisson was able to get the UConn offense going once again when she posted her third goal of the season at the 15:00 mark of the final period. Chaisson capitalized on the third UConn power play of the game when Evelyn and Rebecca Hewett (Oak Bluff, Man.) fed her in front of the net. The assist was Evelyn's second of the night and the fifth of the season for Hewett.
With just under three minutes left in the game the Huskies pulled Garcia for the extra attacker, but despite the advantage UConn was only able to tally four shots before Yale struck again for the 5-2 lead.
Throughout the night Yale held the slight advantage in shots, ending the contest with 33 as UConn finished with 30.
Garcia made 28 saves for the Huskies on the night, marking her 12th game with at least 25 saves this season.
The Huskies will now play Sacred Heart in the consolation game of the Nutmeg Classic, which begins at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center.
