VERMONT SKATES TO 3-3 TIE AT RENSSELAER

Teddy Fortin scored the first goal of the game for the Catamounts

TROY, N.Y. - The Vermont women's hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw in their season opener against the Rensselaer Engineers Friday night.

The Catamounts opened the scoring, as senior Teddy Fortin (Brunswick, ME) scored at 8:06 of the first period. Fortin took a pass from Chelsea Rapin (Walled Lake, MI), and wristed the puck over the shoulder of RPI goalie Sonja van der Bliek for the 1-0 advantage.

Rensselaer pulled things even at the 14:27 mark of the first after Kendra Dunlop stuffed the puck past freshman Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, Quebec) at the far post on the powerplay.

Vermont regained the lead less than three minutes later after Celeste Doucet (Memramcook, New Brunswick) ripped a shot into the right corner for a 2-1 lead.

Vermont scored the lone goal in the second period as freshman defenseman Breanne Sundquist's (Avondale, AZ) shot from the top of the right circle snuck in just under the crossbar. Sundquist's first collegiate goal was assisted by fellow freshman Valerie Stoul (Montville, NJ).

Rensselaer scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the third period to even the game at three a piece. Douville stood on her head for the rest of the period making ten saves to take the game to overtime.

After a number of chances by both teams in overtime, the game ended in a draw.

The teams will meet again on Saturday at the Houston Field House, face-off is at 4pm.
