PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team registered a 3-2 loss against the Boston University Terriers on Sunday, Feb. 16 at Schneider Arena in the team's last home game of the regular season. Providence drops to 11-21-0 overall and 6-13-0 against Hockey East teams.
Providence was trailing 1-0 following the first period after Boston University grabbed the lead with a power play goal at 9:50. The Terriers had gained possession of the puck from behind the Friars net and Louise Warren sent a pass to Kaleigh Fratkin. Fratkin's shot from the point was redirected on its way towards the goal by Sarah Lefort, who was credited with the goal.
While on a power play, freshman Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) evened the game at one with her fourteenth goal of the season for the Friars at 6:49 of the second period. Junior Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) earned an assist as she took the puck from the blue line and sent a pass to sophomore Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) . Romanchuk skated in and took a shot from just outside the circle that was deflected by Carels, who was in front of Boston University goaltender Kerrin Sperry.
Carels' 14th goal of the season put her 25th on a list of 250 all-time freshman that have scored 14 or more goals as a rookie.
Before the second period ended, the Terriers would find a way to score twice more on Providence goaltender senior Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.). Jordan Juron broke the tie for the Terriers at 8:44 of the second. Taylor Holze skated into the Friars zone and found Juron open in between the circles. Juron fired a shot over Riley for a 2-1 BU lead.
Warren extended the lead for Boston University with the third power play goal of the game at 13:21 of the second period. The game-winner for the Terriers came as a result of a shot by Fratkin that was redirected while on its way to the net by Elia first and then Warren.
The Friars tightened the score at 8:05 of the third period as junior Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) scored her sixth goal of the season. Romanchuk tallied her second assist of the game as she got the puck to Frade. Frade, also with her second assist of the match, carried the puck through the Terriers zone and cut into the net, getting a shot off on that made its way out for Micheletti to fire home.
Riley made 21 saves for the Friars in the game, while Sperry stopped 37 shots. Providence outshot Boston University, 39-24.
Special teams played an important role as three of the games goals were power-play tallies. The Friars went 1-for-7 and the Terriers went 2-for-4.
Prior to the start of the game, the Friars honored their six graduating seniors. Graduate student Janine Weber (Innsbruck, Austria), along with seniors Moira Sweeney, Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.), Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.), Nina Riley and Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.) were all recognized for their contributions to the program.
The Friars close out the regular season with a weekend away series at Vermont. The opening game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21 at 7:00p.m. and the closing game is set for 4:00p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22.
