PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FALLS TO CLARKSON, 5-1

Senior forward Stephanie DeMars scored a goal for the Friars

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Providence College women's ice hockey fell to No. 7 Clarkson, 5-1, on Friday, Nov. 15 at Cheel Arena in Postdam, N.Y. The loss moves the Friar's overall record 4-9-0 on the season and 3-4-1 all-time against Clarkson.

The Knights were first on the board with a goal late in the first period. Christine Lambert skated into the Providence zone and fired a shot on net using the Providence defenseman as a screen to put the puck low five-hole on Friar sophomore goaltender Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.) at 18:13 of the period. Lambert was assisted on the play Olivia Howe.

Bryant finished the period with eight saves, including a breakaway save against Clarkson leading scorer, Jamie Lee Rattray, while Clarkson goaltender Erica Howe finished the period with six saves.

Clarkson took a commanding 3-0 following the second period with goals from Shelby Nisbet and Brittany Styner.

Nisbet received a pass from Shannon MacAulay while in the Friars defensive end. Nisbet rolled off the wall and around a Providence player before firing a puck high glove side on Bryant and collecting her fourth goal of the season at 4:45 of the second period.

After a late hit by sophomore Brittney Thunstrom (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and a scrum in the corner both Clarkson and Providence would play four-on-four for five minutes. Clarkson extended its lead while both teams were down a player. Styner got a step on the Providence defenseman and entered the zone on a breakaway. Byrant made the initial save on Styner's shot but could not control the rebound as Styner and Rattray came flying into the net to put the Knights up 3-0 at 14:52 of the period.

Early in the third period the Knights extended their lead to 4-0, when Genevieve Bannon scored her sixth goal of the season off a pass from Cayley Mercer. Carly Mercer notched the second assist on the play and her tenth of the season at 1:33 of the period.

The Friars battled back and responded with a goal from red shirt junior Stephanie Demars (Vermontville, N.Y.) at 3:21 of the third period. DeMars fired a puck from just inside the blueline that went low glove side for her first collegiate goal and first point of the season. Graduate student Janine Weber (Innsbruck, Austria) made the pass to DeMars from along the wall for her third assist of the season.

With the game 4-1, the Knights capitalized on their fourth breakaway of the game. At 4:48 of the third, Olivia Howe notched her second goal of the season when she entered the zone on a breakaway before making a move to her forehand and sliding the puck past Bryant to give the Knights a 5-1 lead.

Bryant finished the game with 22 saves, while Howe made 17 to earn the win. Clarkson outshot Providence, 27-18, as the fifth team to outshoot the Friars this season.

Providence and Clarkson will warp-up the two-game series tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 16 at Cheel Arena at 3:00 p.m.
