BURLINGTON, Vt. - St. Lawrence scored three second period goals including two 28 seconds apart as they defeated Vermont 4-0 Thursday night in non-conference action at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The Saints and Catamounts played a tentative first period with each team looking for the other to make the first mistake. Vermont's Molly Depew, who was making her second straight start in net, made six first period saves as the teams played to a scoreless first frame.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring 8:22 into the second period just as a Vermont power play opportunity was ending. In transition Jenna Marks passed back to Hannah Miller who stepped into the slot and beat Depew with a shot labeled for the top corner. Miller's second goal of the season was also assisted by Amanda Boulier.
With 1:11 left in the frame Justine Reyes won a puck battle along the boards and passed out to Amanda Boulier at the point. Boulier fired a high slap shot through traffic for her first goal of the season. Seconds later with 43 seconds left in the second Amanda McClure scored on another point shot through traffic. Dominique Korakianitis and Kayla Neilsen assisted on what was also McClure's first goal of the season.
St. Lawrence stretched its lead to four with an even strength goal 4:03 into the third period. Megan Armstrong fired a low shot towards the net and Miller redirected it up and over the shoulder of Depew for her second goal of the night. Kennedy Marchment picked up her team leading seventh point of the season with the secondary assist on Miller's goal.
Midway through the third the Catamounts appeared to score their first of the night after Victoria Andreakos found Amanda Drobot alone in front. Drobot beat St. Lawrence's Brooke Wolejko but the puck ricocheted off both posts and out.
Wolejko finished the night with 17 saves to earn the Saints first win of the season and her first career shutout.
"This is a young team that hasn't figured out how to finish at both ends of the ice," said head coach Jim Plumer. "Tonight was frustrating because we did get off to a good start and generated some quality offense in the first period. We've got to take care of the details in both the offensive and defensive zones."
Vermont concludes its home-and-home series with the Saints tomorrow night with puck drop set for 7 p.m. at Appleton Arena. For live video and stats links fans can click here to go to the schedule page.
NOTES: Vermont's two penalty minutes was a season low ... Casey Leveillee, Gina Repaci and Victoria Andreakos led the team with two blocked shots ... Alyssa Gorecki led all Catamounts with 10 faceoff wins.
