HAMDEN, Conn. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team looses a close one in their season opener, 3-2 to the Bobcats of Quinnipiac.

Quinnipiac took no time in getting on the board as they scored just 58 seconds into the contest. Nina Steigauf scored the first goal of the 2021-22 season for the Bobcats. Sadie Peart (1) and Alexa Hoskin (1) grabbed the assists.

Maine would bounce back early in the second period as Celine Tedenby connected on a point-blank shot on the power play to tie up the game at 1-1. Ali Beltz (1) and Ida Kuoppala (1) picked up the assists.

Quinnipiac would break the tie later on in the second period as Alexa Hoskin fought for a rebound and tucked in a shot. Sadie Peart (2) picked up the assist.

With 36 seconds remaining in the second period, Courtney Vorster for the Bobcats scored her first of the season to give Quinnipiac a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission. Jess Schryver (1) and Lexi Adzija (1) picked up the assists.

For the Black Bears, Loryn Porter tallied 23 saves through the first 2 periods, while Logan Angers had 11.

With 8 minutes remaining in the third, Maddie Giordano fires a rocket from the middle of the ice to draw Maine within one. Ally Johnson (1) grabs the assist.

That would conclude the scoring for the contest and the Quinnipiac Bobcats would move to 1-0 on the new year.

For the Black Bears (0-1), they are back in action Saturday, Sept. 25 at 3:00 P.M. for game two against Quinnipiac.
