Maine Defeated By Denver, 3-1, In Ice Breaker

DENVER -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated the #1 University of Denver Pioneers, 3-1, on Saturday evening in Magness Arena.

First Goal (1-0 #1 Denver): After the Black Bears were called for consecutive icings, the Pioneers scored the first goal of the contest. Mike Benning shot from the top of the left face-off dot and found the back of the Maine net. 6:57 into the Ice Breaker Championship game, #1 Denver held a one goal lead.

Second Goal (2-0 #1 Denver): While on the power play, the Pioneers scored their second goal of the first period. Victor Ostman made the original save, but the rebound bounced to an open Carter Mazuer. The forward gave his squad a two goal advantage.

Third Goal (3-0 #1 Denver): Mazur, his second of the period, scored with 00:31 left in the first period. At the end of 20:00, Maine trailed 3-0 in Colorado.

The second period was played to a 0-0 tie. The Black Bears outshot Denver 12-10 during the middle 20:00.

Fourth Goal (3-1 #1 Denver): With 00:39 left in regulation, Donavan Villeneuve-Houle tipped home a David Breazeale shot. Killian Kiecker-Olson set up the play with a pass to Breazeale, who fired from the blue line. It was the final goal of the contest as Maine fell, 3-1.


Notes:

Victor Ostman stopped 33 shots for the Black Bears, while Matt Davis recorded 24 saves between the pipes for Denver.

Maine went 0 for 2 on the power play, as the Pioneers were 1-7 on its player advantages.
