ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated the American International College Yellow Jackets, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
First Goal (1-0 Maine): Nolan Renwick scored the first goal of the afternoon contest. David Breazeale fired a shot that was saved by the AIC netminder. Felix Trudeau picked up the loose puck and left it for Renwick. The sophomore forward's shot found some space just below the crossbar. Maine grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first period.
Second Goal (1-1): Just over three minutes later, the Yellow Jackets found the equalizer. While on the powerplay, Julius Janhonen found the back of the net and tied the non-conference game at one goal apiece.
Third Goal (2-1 Maine): While blocking the front of the net, Lynden Breen scored his first of two second period goals. Grayson Arnott wristed a shot from the blue line that deflected off Breen's back and into the net. The lead for the Black Bears would continue to grow.
Fourth Goal (3-1 Maine): At the 14:31 mark, Breen scored his second goal of the afternoon. The junior forward spun and let go of the puck from an impossible angle. The goalkeeper was not able to see the puck through traffic. Ben Poisson and Brandon Chabrier were credited with assists on the crazy goal.
Fifth Goal (4-1 Maine): Donovan Villeneuve-Houle put the cherry on top of the second period with a total effort goal. Michael Mancinelli's shot was saved by AIC, but Houle did not give up. The junior, being the fastest skater on the ice, punched home Maine's third goal of the second period. The Black Bears led 4-1 after 40:00.
Sixth Goal (5-1 Maine): Luke Antonacci scored the final goal of the afternoon for the Black Bears. Didrik Henbrant left the puck for the freshman defenseman who did the rest. The four goal advantage would stand as Maine defeated the Yellow Jackets, 5-1.
Notes: Victor Ostman saved 17 shots in net for the Black Bears, while Jarrett Fiske and Brennan Boynton combined to stop 41 shots between the pipes for AIC.
Maine went 0 for 3 on the power play, as the Yellowjackets were 1-2 on its player advantages.
