ORONO, Maine - Lukas Gustafsson scored on an elevated backhand in the eighth round of a shootout to secure an extra point for No. 1 Boston College following a 2-2 tie with No. 13 Maine on Saturday night to close a Hockey East weekend series at Alfond Arena.

The Eagles earned two league points and pushed their record to 7-2-1 (2-1-1 HEA), while the Black Bears moved to 6-1-1 (3-0-1 HEA).

Rookie linemates Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard each scored a goal and added an assist for multi-point nights. Perreault extended his point streak to eight games, while Leonard scored for the fourth straight game and fifth time in six contests.

Freshman Jacob Fowler made 31 saves and stopped six of the eight shootout attempts he faced.

Maine took the lead with 1:19 remaining in the first period when Felix Trudeau finished a loose puck from the top of the crease following a net-front scramble.

Boston College had an answer early in the second period at the 2:43 mark shortly after Leonard was released from the penalty box. Leonard forced a turnover along the right wing boards and dropped a pass to an overlapping Perreault, who picked the short side high from the right dot.

It remained 1-1 until the 12:00 mark of the third when Josh Nadeau one-timed a touch pass from Lynden Breen inside the left post on the power play, putting Maine ahead 2-1.

BC tied the game with 4:14 left in regulation as Perreault and Will Smith both got touches on the puck around the net-front and Leonard buried the rebound from the left doorstep to force overtime.

Gustafsson, whose father played hockey for Maine, won the shootout in the eighth round as he deked to his backhand just outside the crease and lifted a shot over Victor Ostman (26 saves).

Boston College faces UConn next weekend in a home-and-home series, beginning at Kelley Rink on Friday at 7 p.m.
