HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Maine’s offense exploded behind seven points (4g, 3a) from Ida Kuoppala in a sweep at Stonehill by a combined score of 14-1. Rookie defender Ashley Kokavec posted four points (2g, 2a) and Jorden Mattison picked up a 23-save shutout on Friday in a 7-0 win.

Northeastern opened up the 2023-24 Hockey East season with a pair of wins over cross-town rival Boston University, 4-1 and 2-0. Gwyneth Philips posted her fourth shutout in six games and three points (2g, 1a) from Peyton Anderson, including the game-winning goal and an assist in a 2-0 win at home against the Terriers.

Merrimack swept a two-game set at Syracuse behind a near-perfect outing from Calli Hogarth, who made 30 saves on 31 shots from the Orange.

The Hockey East on NESN schedule begins this weekend as No. 8 Quinnipiac visits Providence on Saturday at 3 p.m. The slate consists of 50 games that will air on either NESN or NESN+ this season, including a significant amount of men’s and women’s playoff games. Details on postseason coverage will be announced at a later date.

Ida Kuoppala - Maine

Ida Kuoppala (Gr., F; Pedersore, Finland) exploded for four goals and three assists, including the game-winning helper as part of a one-goal, two-assist effort in Friday’s 7-0 victory in a two-game road set at Stonehill. In Saturday’s 7-1 win, the fifth-year student posted a hat trick and an assist in a four-point outing.

Ashley Kokavec - Maine

Ashley Kokavec (Fr., D; Parkland, Fla.) posted two goals and two assists in a weekend sweep at Stonehill. She scored the game-winning goal in Friday’s 7-0 victory, her first career NCAA tally, and added another strike and a helper for a three-point night. She also assisted on the opening goal in Saturday’s 7-1 endcap.

Rae Breton - New Hampshire

Rae Breton (Gr., D; Brighton, Ont.) recorded seven blocks in a two-game series against No. 8 Quinnipiac, including a career-high five blocks on Saturday.

Calli Hogarth - Merrimack

Calli Hogarth (So., G; Barrie, Ont.) made 30 saves on 31 shots in two starts at Syracuse, including a 15-save shutout on Saturday.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Millie Sirum, HC (Sr., F; Oslo, Norway) Scored one goal and had one assist in game two of a two-game set at Union while registering four shots. Her goal tied the score at 3-3 to force overtime

Reghan Chadwick, HC (Fr., F; Port Hope, Ont.) Recorded her first two collegiate goals and one blocked shot during a road trip Union. She registered four shots on net on the weekend.

Emilie Fortunato, HC (Jr., D; Laval, Que.) Had one assist and one block Friday at Union and added three blocks and two shot attempts on Saturday.

Ann-Frederique Guay, Maine (Gr., F; St-Lambert-de-Lauzon, Que.) Posted two goals in each of Maine’s wins at Stonehill last weekend.

Jorden Mattison, Maine (Sr., G: Fenwick, Ont.) Kicked out all 23 shots she faced from Stonehill on Friday, backboning Maine to a 7-0 win.

Maria Lindberg, MC (Fr., F; Stockholm, Sweden) Dished out two assists in Merrimack’s 4-0 win at Syracuse on Saturday, helping the Warriors to a two-game sweep and a three-game winning streak.

Hayley Chang, MC (Jr., D; Coquitlam, B.C.) Assisted the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory at Syracuse on Friday.

Sydney Leonard, UNH (Fr., F; St. Bonifacius, Minn.) Recorded two points with a goal and an assist in UNH’s two-game series against No. 8 Quinnipiac. She extended her assist streak to three games and then pushed the point streak to four games with her first career goal. Her assist set up the goal that tied the score, 2-2, with nine seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. She also recorded three blocked shots on Saturday. Leonard won 24 faceoffs.

Sedona Blair, UNH (Fr., G; Eden Prairie, Minn.) Stopped 68 of 75 shots in UNH’s two-game series against No. 8 Quinnipiac. She made 33 saves in the 3-2 overtime loss and followed that with a career-high 35 saves in a 4-1 loss; two of the goals against in that came were scored on the Bobcats’ power play.

Peyton Anderson, NU (Gr., F; Arvada, Colo.) Registered three points to lead Northeastern to a weekend sweep over Boston University. Anderson potted one goal in a 4-1 victory at BU. She followed up with the game-winning goal and an assist in a 2-0 win at home against the Terriers.

Allie Lalonde, NU (Fr., F; Irvine, Calif.) Tallied a goal and an assist to help Northeastern to a sweep over Boston University. Lalonde scored the Huskies’ first goal in a 4-1 win and then assisted on the game-winner in a 2-0 victory on Saturday.

Abbey Marohn, NU (Sr., D; Saint Joseph, Mich.) Registered two assists and anchored a defensive unit that allowed just one goal in a weekend sweep over Boston University. Marohn posted the second multi-point game of her career with two assists in a 4-1 win at BU on Friday.

Gwyneth Philips, NU (Gr., G; Athens, Ohio) Continued her stellar form, making 52 saves to earn two victories over Boston University in the first home-and-home series of the 2023-24 Hockey East schedule. Philips posted a 31-save shutout, her NCAA-leading fourth shutout and fifth win of the season, on Saturday.

Natalie Zarcone, UVM (Fr., D; Huntington, N.Y.) Scored her first career goal Saturday against No. 9 Clarkson. On the weekend she was a plus-two on-ice rating as the Catamounts earned a tie against the previously unbeaten Golden Knights in a 0-1-1 weekend.

Jessie McPherson, UVM (Sr., G; Chatham, Ont.) Made 57 saves on 63 shots in a 0-1-1 weekend series against No. 9 Clarkson. She made 30 saves on Saturday backstopping UVM to a 2-2 tie. It was the sixth time in her career she has made 30 or more saves. On Saturday she also made two stops in the exhibition shootout against Clarkson.
