Goaltending Shines Across the League As Final Month Begins

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

UConn netminder Tia Chan pitched two shutouts, her fourth and fifth of the season, to backbone the Huskies to a 1-0-1 weekend and five league points.

Northeastern claimed its 19th Beanpot title, toppling cross-town rival Boston University, 2-1, in overtime in front of 10,633 fans at TD Garden. It was the largest crowd to witness a women’s ice hockey game in New England at any level. Skylar Irving scored both Husky goals and was named MVP.

New Hampshire standout Sedona Blair stopped 65 of 69 shots, including all 18 off the sticks of Maine’s Ida Kuoppala and Ann-Frederique Guay, two of the league’s top goal scorers, to deliver a weekend sweep of the Black Bears.

Holy Cross swept Boston University 2-1 and 3-2, off career weekends from Emily Crovo and Brooke Loranger. Crovo scored both goals in the 2-1 win, the first two tallies of her career, while Loranger picked up the first two victories in Hockey East play of her time with the Crusaders.

Paige Taborski earned her first career shutout with 12 saves in her first career start for Northeastern on Friday. She followed up by stopping 11 of 14 shots she faced Saturday to cap off a two-win weekend.

Providence went 1-0-1 against No. 13 Boston College and the Friars are now 5-0-1 since returning from Belfast, Northern Ireland where they competed in the Friendship Series.

Shea Verrier - New Hampshire

Shea Verrier (Jr., F; Reading, Mass.) recorded two goals and four assists for a total of six points to lead UNH to a pair of 4-2 wins against Maine. She won 20 of 28 faceoffs and added three blocks, a plus- three rating and 10 shots on net. Verrier factored in all four goals, and scored the game-winner, in Friday’s win. She had two goals and two assists to match her personal bests and the four points established a career high.

Sedona Blair - New Hampshire
Emily Crovo - Holy Cross

Sedona Blair (Fr., G; Eden Prairie, Minn.) stopped 65 of 69 shots for a .942 save percentage and 2.00 GAA to backbone UNH to a two-game sweep of Maine. Blair stopped 32 of 34 shots, including a penalty shot, in Friday’s 4-2 win. Blair recorded 30+ saves for the third consecutive game and 10th time this season with a 33-save effort in Saturday’s 4-2 win. That included three shots in the final minute with the Black Bears’ net empty to create a 6-on-5 advantage.

Emily Crovo (Fr., F; Melrose, Mass.) potted her first career goal on Saturday and later netted the eventual game-winning strike in the 3-2 win over Boston University.

Megan Carter - Northeastern

Megan Carter (Gr., D; Milton, Ont.) posted four assists to lead Northeastern to a 19th Beanpot title and weekend sweep over Merrimack. Carter tallied an assist on the game-winner in the Beanpot. She then posted two assists at Merrimack and one at home over the Warriors. Carter had five blocks over the three games. Her 12 assists are tied to lead all Hockey East defensemen on the season.

Paige Taborski - Northeastern

Tia Chan (Jr., G; Hamilton, Ont.) Did not allow a goal all weekend, posting back to back shutouts for the second time this season and fifth overall. She made 31 saves and earned a 1-0-1 record in a weekend series against Vermont, backboning the Huskies to five points in league play. Chan is now unbeaten in her last three games and has allowed just one goal.

Paige Taborski (Jr., G; Roscoe, Ill.) made her first two career starts in goal and picked up two wins for the Huskies. In her first career start, Taborski pitched a 12-save shutout on the road at Merrimack. She then tallied 11 saves in a home victory over the Warriors in a 4-3 win.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Molly Jordan, BC (Fr., D; Berlin, Conn.) Scored both of the Eagles’ goals this weekend in a 0-1-1 series with Providence. She now has four goals in her last four games, the first four tallies of her career.

Alex Law, BU (Fr., F; Whitby, Ont.) Recorded a goal in Saturday’s game at Holy Cross and also assisted on the late game-tying goal in the Beanpot title game on Tuesday.

Catherine Foulem, BU (Sr., F; Dieepe, N.B.) Scored the game-tying goal with less than a minute left on Tuesday’s Beanpot champion- ship game in front of 10,633 fans at TD Garden. Added an assist on Saturday at Holy Cross.

Ashley Allard, UConn (Fr., F; Ottawa, Ont.) Dished out an assist on Friday in a 3-0 win over Vermont.

Bryn Saarela, HC (Sr., F; Denver, Colo.) Netted the game-winner in game one of a sweep of Boston University and also had assist on the first goal of a 2-1 win. She added on another assist in a 3-2 victory on Saturday. The two wins snapped an eight-game skid for the Crusaders.

Emma Min, HC (Jr., D; London, Ont.) Had five blocks in a weekend sweep of Boston University. She had one in the first game of the BU series and four in game two.

Brooke Loranger, HC (So., G; Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) Earned both wins against Boston University on the weekend, her first two career Hockey East victories. In game one she had 28 saves and make 37 stops in game two. She now has a 2.86 goals against average with a .906 save percentage.

Ashley Kokavec, Maine (Fr., D; Parkland, Fla.) Found the back of the net twice at New Hampshire while firing six shots on net and blocking one shot.

Elise Morphy, Maine (Sr., D; Regina, Sask.) Converted both shots on net into goals at New Hampshire and added a blocked shot and a plus-two rating. She is currently riding a three-game point streak (2g, 1a).

Ann-Frederique Guay, Maine (Gr., F; St-Lambert-de-Lauzon, Que.) Dished out two assists at New Hampshire to extend her point- streak to four games (2g, 3a) and surpassed 150 points in her five-year college career.

Celine Tedenby, MC (Gr., F; Ornskoldvik, Sweden) Had two primary assists in Merrimack’s 4-3 setback to Northeastern on Saturday.

Solveig Gisler, MC (Fr., D; Linkoping, Sweden) Notched her first career goal for Merrimack on Saturday.

Calli Hogarth, MC (So., G; Barrie, Ont.) Started both games for Merrimack, making 46 saves, and reached over 1,000 saves in her Merrimack career this weekend.

Charli Kettyle, UNH (Sr., D; Perth, Ont.) Recorded four points, all on assists, three blocked shots and a plus-one rating to lead UNH to a pair of 4-2 wins against Maine. Kettyle recorded multiple assists for the first time in her career with three assists on Friday; she had previously tallied one assist in a game 21 times. The three points also marked a career high. With UNH trailing 2-1 midway through the third period, Kettyle factored in all three Wildcat goals – at 11:02, 13:25 and 18:00 – to propel the ‘Cats to victory. On Saturday, Kettyle tallied an assist and blocked three shot attempts. Her helper tied the game, 2-2, at 16:25 of the second period.

Katy Knoll, NU (Gr., F; Amherst, N.Y.) Posted two goals and three assists for five points to lead Northeastern to a 3-0-0 week. Knoll assisted the game-winner to deliver NU a 19th Beanpot title against BU on Tuesday. She then had a three-point game (1-2-3) on the road at Merrimack and then posted the game-winner in a 4-3 victory at home over the Warriors.

Ella Blackmore, NU (Fr., F; Northville, Mich.) Tallied two goals in a 3-0-0 week for the Huskies. Blackmore helped the Huskies to a Beanpot title and then posted back-to-back goals over Merrimack. She finished plus-one in all three games for a plus-three rating on the week.

Hope Walinski, PC (Jr., G; Lincoln, R.I.) Held No. 13 Boston College to one goal on both Friday and Saturday en route to a 1-0-1 week- end. On Friday, Walinski made 28 saves before posting 27 stops on Saturday.

Jessie McPherson, UVM (Sr., G; Chatham, Ont.) Stopped 42 of 45 shots she faced from UConn this weekend, including an 18-save shutout on Saturday in a 0-0 tie.
